Why 30 Degrees Is the Default
The angle sets how far the assembly projects for a given wall width, and it moves the price in two places at once. A 30-degree bay projects least, which means the smallest cap roof, the least soffit and the lightest support demand. It is the volume product, and it is what most stock pricing assumes.
When 45 Degrees or a Box Bay Is Worth It
A 45-degree bay reaches further out for the same wall width, so the cap grows, the soffit grows and the support question gets serious. A 90-degree box bay has square corners and a deeper usable seat, almost always needs framed support rather than cables, and typically prices 20 to 35 percent above a 30-degree unit of the same width. Pick the angle for the seat depth you want, not for the look in a catalog.
How Far It Projects, Measured Where It Counts
Ask for finished projection rather than unit depth. The seat board and jamb extensions consume two to three inches, and that is the difference between a usable ledge and a disappointing one.
Under about 16 inches finished, the shelf holds objects. Between 18 and 22 inches, an adult can sit sideways with a cushion. Past 24 inches you are into structural framing, the cap roof grows enough that roofing becomes a real line item, and on some elevations you start bumping into setback rules. Each step up in depth drags the support method up with it, and the support method is where the money is.
Depth also adds floor area rather than taking it, which is why a bay reads as a room enlargement and a flat window never will. In a twelve by fourteen living room, an 18-inch projection across six feet of wall returns roughly nine square feet of usable depth at the window. That gain is what people are really buying, and it scales directly with the variable that costs the most.
Frame Material and What It Costs Over Twenty Years
Vinyl carries most of the $2,400 to $4,800 tier and is a sound twenty-year answer on any elevation. Fiberglass and composite run 25 to 45 percent higher, hold dark exterior colors better under summer sun, and move less across the temperature swing this state produces between January and July. Clad wood sits at the top: aluminum outside, wood inside, and the only route to a factory-stained interior.
Andersen, Pella and Marvin all publish clad wood bay assemblies. The differences that actually change a quote are lead time, which finished projections are offered as standard, and whether the seat and head boards arrive from the factory or get built on site by the crew. Ask those three questions rather than comparing brochures.
Color is where material turns into a cost decision rather than a preference. Dark exteriors absorb heat, and a dark vinyl frame on a west wall in July moves more than a fiberglass or clad one does. Manufacturers publish which colors are approved on which product line and which sizes. On a bay it matters more than on a flat window, because the assembly presents three planes catching sun at three different times of day.
Which Way the Room Faces in Summitville
A bay puts glass on three planes, which multiplies whatever the wall was already doing. On a south or west elevation, that means summer heat gain collected across a much wider arc than a flat window ever managed, and a low solar heat gain coating is worth its $150 to $400 upcharge. On a north wall the same coating costs you free winter warmth for no benefit.
Low-E and argon are standard on nearly every unit sold now. The choice that still matters is which low-E coating goes on which elevation, and that is a per-wall decision rather than a whole-house one. A good estimator will ask which direction the room faces before quoting glass. Most do not.
Winter condensation belongs in the same conversation. A bay sits outside the main wall line with cold air moving around three sides of it, so the glass and the seat run colder than the same units would sitting flat in the wall. In a house with a humidifier set high, that is where moisture shows up first, usually along the bottom edge of the center light. The fix is airflow and humidity control rather than a different window, but it is far better to expect it than to be surprised by it in the first January.

Carried From Below
Knee braces at $150 to $500, or cantilevered joists at $600 to $1,800. Which of those is easy depends entirely on the direction the floor joists run under the room. Joists perpendicular to the wall extend outward simply. Joists running parallel mean new framing tied back several feet into the floor system, and the price heads for the top of that range or past it.
There is a third case people forget. On a second-storey bay, or a first-floor bay over a crawlspace with no working access, neither knee braces nor a cantilever is simple, and the answer is usually a reinforced head assembly with cables plus a structural sill. That configuration exists, it works, and it prices closer to the cantilever than to the cable option. A quote treating an upstairs bay as a straightforward cable job has missed something.
What the Cheaper Bay Quietly Gives Up
Every $1,000 removed from a bay quote comes out of one of four places, and they are not equal. Frame material is the least painful cut. Cap roof material is next, and shingles are fine where the slope allows them and the flashing is done properly.
After that it gets expensive. Support method decides whether the seat is furniture or decoration. Cavity insulation decides whether the room is comfortable in February. Cut in that order and stop before the last two.
One more thing worth knowing before signing: a bay does not save energy by being a bay. It replaces a flat window with more glass and roughly 40 square feet of added exterior surface. Any improvement comes from the unit being new and the cavities being sealed properly, not from the shape. Anyone selling the projection as an efficiency upgrade is selling the wrong benefit, and it is a fair signal to get another quote.
Whether the Rough Opening Has to Change
This is the biggest single fork in a bay quote. Reuse the opening and the cost is zero. Widen a frame opening and it is $400 to $1,200 for header, studs and patching. Widen a masonry opening and it is $1,500 to $4,000 with shoring and a lintel. Raise or lower the head height and you add drywall, exterior trim, and often a change to how the cap meets the wall.
Measure before falling for a width. Stock bay assemblies come in fairly tight increments, and there is very often one that fits the existing hole within an inch or two, which is worth more than a slightly better proportion.
The Seat, and What Goes Under It
Materials
Laminate, veneered board, engineered veneer, solid stock, spanning about $300 to $900 on a six-foot bay. Humid summers and dry heated winters argue for a moisture-tolerant substrate no matter what the visible surface is.
Storage
Hinged lids over a cantilevered cavity add $200 to $600 and are only possible when the support is framing rather than cables. So the storage question is really the support question wearing a different hat, and it has to be answered before the unit is ordered rather than after.
